Do Not Throw That Away! Reusing Wine Bottles To Surround Your Patio

Creating a unique patio is one way to make your backyard landscape stand out among the rest. If you're like most people, you want to enjoy the uniqueness and comfort of your patio, and you want your family and friends to enjoy it too. While there are many ways to create a unique patio quickly, you can design a border for it over time using wine bottles. This guide explains the steps needed to complete this project.

Step 1: Collect the Bottles and Other Supplies

Collect as many wine bottles as necessary to surround the patio. As you're collecting them, rinse them out completely to ensure that no residual wine is left in the bottle. That way, they don't attract ants while in storage, or after you set them in place. In addition to the wine bottles, you'll need to pick up these items as well:

  • glass spray paint
  • newspapers
  • small hand shovel

Step 2: Paint the Bottles

Once you have enough bottles to surround your patio, select a well-ventilated area to work in.

Lay down the newspapers and set a few bottles on them.

Shake the can of spray paint several times and then spray the bottles with the paint lightly.

Wait for about an hour or so, and then paint the other side of the bottles.

When you've finished painting the entire perimeter of the bottles, and the paint is dry, lay the bottles on their side and spray the paint on the bottom.

Step 3: Dig the Holes

Put on your gardening gloves, and dig small holes with the hand shovel all the way around the patio.

Step 4: Insert the Bottles

Stick the mouth of the bottles in the holes, all the way around your patio. If they don't want to stay in place, use the hand shovel to make the hole a little deeper. The mouths of the bottles should be all the way in the ground, and the necks should be even with the ground.

Scoop up some of the dirt you dug up and pack it around the bottles with your hands.

If you feel like getting really creative, choose various colors of paint for the bottles instead of just one. Then arrange the different colored bottles in your desired pattern around the patio Depending on the size of your patio, you'll save some space in the landfills by using wine bottles in this manner.
